The Centre has granted sanction to prosecute IPS officer Tomin J Thachankary in a vigilance case for amassing wealth disproportionate to his known sources of income to the tune of `79 lakh .
The sanction was granted after postponing the request for the same for about two years. The Vigilance and Anti-Corruption Bureau will soon file a chargesheet against Thachankary at the Vigilance special court in Ernakulam.
A request of the VACB to prosecute Thachankary has been pending with the state and the Centre for about two years allegedly due to his undue influence and the court had recently sought the government’s explanation on the matter.
In a strange move, Thachankary had even submitted a representation directly to theMinistry of Home Affairs, raising objections against granting sanction to prosecute him. Based on this, the Ministry of Home Affairs has sought clarifications from the state government on the case.
Thachankary will be the first direct IPS officer in the state to face prosecution in a Vigilance case. The Vigilance launched the probe against Thachankary as per a court order. Once the case is chargesheeted, he might have to appear before the court and obtain bail.
Thachankary,who was placed under suspension for carrying out foreign trip without prior permission from the government and accepting hospitality of people with suspicious background there, was reinstated in service in April. But he was not yet given fresh posting.
