Youth not interested in jobs under MGNREGS

The age profile of those who availed jobs under the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (MGNREGS) in the district during the 2011-12 financial year reveals the abject lack of enthusiasm towards it among the youth.

Of the beneficiaries split in to five age groups, the lowest participation was from the age group of 18-30 years. While the age group of 40-50 with 36,331 beneficiaries topped the list, the 18-30 age group was at the bottom with a mere 3,815 beneficiaries.

Only 15.61 per cent of the total number of persons registered for jobs from among the 18-30 age group availed of the benefit. This was a mere 3.67 per cent of the total work force of 1.03 lakh persons. In comparison, 53.56 per cent of the 67,826 persons registered from among the 40-50 age group took up the jobs, thus accounting for 34.94 per cent of the total work force.

LESS THAN 1000

Not a single block panchayat out of the 14 in the district saw a work force in excess of 1,000 from the 18-30 age group working under the scheme. Angamaly (568) had the most number of employees whereas the mostly urban Edappally block had only 79 takers for jobs under the scheme. Kothamangalam (535), Koovappady (452), Vazhakulam (310), Mulanthuruthy (300), Palluruthy (276), Muvattupuzha (222), Parakkadavu (219), Alangad (189), Paravur (188), Pampakkuda (168), Vadavucode (163), and Vypeen (146), made up the rest of the list.

Angamaly, Koovappady, and Kothamangalam block panchayats shared among them the top three positions in all five age groups of 18-30, 30-40, 40-50, 50-60, and 60 and above, in terms of number of persons employed under the MGNREGS.

SENIOR CITIZENS

The number of persons aged above 60 who had taken up jobs under the scheme stood at 13,129 as against the total registration of 30,446. In the 50-60 age group, 26,226 turned up for jobs out of the 50,236 registered while 24,457 out of the 49,147 registered among the 30-40 age group worked under the scheme.
