VS not included in politburo

KOZHIKODE: A decision has been taken in the party congress not to reinstate senior most leader of CPM and opposition leader V S Achuthanandan back into the politburo.

The decision not to reinstate him into the politburo was taken in the discussions held last night and Monday morning. The list prepared by the PB did not include the name of VS and the central committee convened here too decided not to reinstate him.

Party leaders outside the state had strongly requested to reinstate him into the politburo. Meantime, the state faction argued that factionalism will increase if he is taken back. Leaders from Tamil Nadu, Punjab, Andhra Pradesh and West Bengal claimed that if a senior leader like VS is not taken back, it would be an insult to the party. As differences of opinion occurred on the issue, the politburo had to comply with the pressure of the state faction.

VS was ousted from the politburo on July 13, 2009 while he was serving as the chief minister. He was ousted for his open attitude against Pinarayi Vijayan in the Lavalin case.

VS is the lone leader alive from among the 32 members who formed the CPM when the party split in 1964.
