Taxi driving takes a toll on the drivers

KOCHI: Taxi drivers are an exploited lot. “Since we do not have a union, we miss out on many benefits. We only get incentives for each trip and tips from some customers, both foreign and domestic. It’s only recently that our agency has introduced insurance scheme for drivers who remain with them for at least six months,” said a driver with a cab agency in the city.
Drivers undergo a lot of stress.
“At times, we have to drive for miles without a break and there are times during peak season when we can’t even take leave.
There are days when we return after a long trip and start the next trip soon,” said a driver.
“Travel agents from Delhi and Mumbai associate with local agencies to cater to foreign and domestic tourists.
The local agencies take a hefty sum but give us only 20 per cent incentive and night allowance of `150.
Also, after taking a package trip of eight to 10 days we get two days off but the payment is never given in time as the amount has to be secured from the bigger agencies,” said a driver.
Some drivers are paid only pittance.
Even accommodation is a problem.
When they go on tour packages most hotels do not offer space for drivers who have to sleep in cab sans toilet facilities.
Some drivers said that the accommodation provided for drivers in different parts of the state and outside, by agencies, is very bad.
“About 15 of us have to adjust in a small room,” said a driver from Kasargod.
