SC to consider Vilappil panchayat’s plea today

Tuesday, April 17, 2012: The Supreme Court will today consider a special petition filed by the Vilappilsala panchayat challenging the Kerala High Court order directing police protection for resuming garbage movement to Vilappilsala waste treatment plant.
The plea pointed out that around 50,000 people in the area are suffering from the garbage issue and it would create serious health problems for the Vilappilsala residents. Several days have passed since the closure of the plant but the alternatives set up by the authorities have failed to create any impact.
This has forced a section of traders and meat merchants to dispose of their waste in desolate places in the rural areas and in the outskirts of the city. Garbage is piling up in almost all the streets in the rural areas and the stench emanating from the waste has made life miserable for local people and passersby.
