Rs 10 cr project for protecting senior citizens: Minister

Monday, April 16, 2012: A Rs 10 crore ‘Care Aid Relief for Elders’ project will be implemented in Kerala shortly as part of providing police security to senior citizens, State Home Minister Thiruvanchoor Radhakrishnan said.
In most houses in the state, either one or two senior citizens were staying who do not have any protection or contact with neighbours, he said, adding, such persons should get protection.
A separate wing of the police will be established for the purpose, the minister told the media here.
With a view to strengthening law and order in coastal areas, ten coastal police stations will be set up at Poovar, Thiruvananthapuram, Anchutheng, Ponnani, Vamanad, Thalassery, Vadakara, Elathur, Thrikkaripur and Kumbalam, he said.
He said to check the possibility of people absconding after committing a crime, a Crime and Criminal Tracing Network System will be introduced at an estimated cost of Rs 48 crore.
The system, which will be completed within a year, would be linked to other police stations in the country and if the identity of a person was received, police could arrest him immediately instead of going from one state to another, the minister said.
The police department will be strengthened by giving modern weapons to police officials, he said, adding the aim of the Home Department was protection to all.
