Prayers, homily mark Maundy Thursday observance

Thursday,5 April 2012: Hundreds of Christians in the district on Thursday reaffirmed their faith in the Eucharist or Holy Communion, the sacrament commemorating the Last Supper, instituted by Jesus Christ more than 2,000 years ago.
Referred to as Maundy Thursday, churches across the state commemorates the day with the symbolic washing-the-feet ceremony, processions, holy mass and homily.
At Latin Catholic churches and at the Saint Thomas Cathedral of the Malankara Orthodox Syrian Church the Washing of the Feet ritual was also held.
The chief celebrant of the Mass washes the feet of twelve men in the Washing of the Feet ritual. The ritual is seen as a pious re-enactment of the Christ washing the feet of his twelve disciples at the Last Supper.
The faithful take the ritual as a symbol of the Christ’s message of humility, service and love for his disciples.
