Palakkad custodial death: New officer to head probe


Friday, April 06, 2012: The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has decided to handover the probe into the case relating to the custodial death of Sampath, the prime accused in the Puthur Sheela murder case, to Jayakumar- DySP Chennai unit.
The CBI had decided to appoint new probe officer following the alleged suicide of DySP Haridath (52), who investigated the Sampath death case. The police informed that Haridath’s body was found hanging at his home.
He had been on medical leave for the past one month. During the investigation into the custodial death case, Haridath had given several reports against top police officials like Vijay Sakhare and Muhammed Yasin, who were named as 15 and 16 in the case.
Sampath, the prime accused in Puthur Sheela murder case was killed on March 2010 after the police had tortured him while he was in custody. The CBI took over the investigation following a High Court order.
The CBI filed a report in this regard before the Ernakulam Chief Judicial Magistrate Court. The report said that the IPS officers had played a role in the case. According to the CBI, a police team led by Yasin and Sakhare had visited Coimbatore and arrested Sampath and other accused.
