Nehru statue in progress at Vishakapatnam


The construction of the statue of Jawaharlal Nehru, which is to be installed on August 11 at the Punnamada Finishing Point here in connection with the 60th anniversary of the famous Nehru Trophy Boat Race, is progressing at Vishakapatnam.


The Statue is being constructed under the leadership of C. Ravi Shankar Patnaik, head of the Fine Arts Department of the Andhra University at a cost of Rs 12 lakh. The works started a month ago at a studio in Vishakapatnam for the 12 feet high statue weighing 900 kgs in bronze.


A team from Alappuzha including cultural leader, Devadutt G. Purakkad and District Tourism Promotion Council (DTPC) secretary, V.R. Vinod reviewed the progress of the work of the statue at Vishakapatnam on Wednesday.


The construction of the statue was undertaken by the Tourism Department on the instructions of Union Minister of State for Power and Alappuzha MP, K.C. Venugopal and Kerala Tourism Minister, A.P. Anilkumar. A committee with Tourism Director, Rani George as chairperson and District collector as convener has been entrusted with the supervision of the construction of the statue.
