Mystery shrouds hotel employee’s death in city

KOCHI: A 26-year-old hotel employee, who was undergoing treatment at a city hospital after being rescued while drowning near the Marine Drive last week, died on Sunday. He was admitted to the hospital on March 26.
According to the police, Anoop Raphel of Angamaly was working with an established hotel group in the city. Reportedly, when he was taken to the hospital he had a wound on his forehead, which according to the hotel officials, was caused after he fell down in the hotel.
The Central police have registered a case and started an investigation.
“Anoop was in an inebriated state when the incident took place. That night, he hired an auto rikshaw and went to the hotel. But upon reaching the hotel, he got out of the vehicle and started running without paying the fare. When the driver came out and started chasing him, Anoop ran for a while and reportedly jumped into the water.
The driver immediately alerted the police and fire service officials, who rescued and admitted him to the  General Hospital. We are trying to get some clarity in the incident,”  said Ernakulam Central sub-inspector Anantalal.
