Kerala govt revokes suspension of IG Thachankery

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Kerala government Thursday revoked the suspension of controversial senior IPS officer Tomin J Thachankery, who was suspended in January for violation of service rules. His suspension period ended Thursday and he was reinstated on the basis of recommendation of a high-level committee, headed by Chief Secretary K Jayakumar, official sources said, adding his new post would be decided later.

Holding the rank of Inspector General of Police, he was Managing Director of MarketFed when he was suspended. The charge against Thachankery was that he made a foreign trip to Qatar while he was IG of Kannur range without obtaining necessary government permission. He allegedly met some people with fundamental links, but a probe by NIA had found no such evidence. However, he was found to have violated All India Service Rules.

Thachankery was suspended from service by the previous LDF government in April 2010 for undertaking the trip without its prior consent. Meanwhile, Opposition leader V S Achuthanandan said a cabinet decision to reinstate him appears 'mysterious' and Chief Minister Oommen Chandy should clarify whether was reinstated with the Centre's clearance.
