Explanation sought in Thachankary case

THRISSUR: The Vigilance Court here criticised the government for the delay in prosecuting Inspector General of Police Tomin J Thachankary. While hearing a petition filed by P D Joseph, V Bhaskaran, Special Judge, directed the government to furnish within May 25 an explanation for the delay. Additional Legal Adviser O Sasi told the court that the delay was purely administrative and it could not be attributed to any other reason.

The court sought an explanation for the delay in seeking the Centre's permission for prosecuting Thachankary. The petitioner argued that he was reinstated in service without the approval of the Union government. Thachankary had been suspended for allegedly visiting Qatar without informing the government. He was alleged to have made contacts with fundamentalist outfits during his visits to foreign countries. He faces charges of having amassed assets disproportionate to his known sources of income.
