Displeasure in Cong over 5th ministerial post

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: A section of Congress leaders in Kerala openly expressed their displeasure over the allocation of fifth ministerial berth to the Indian Union Muslim League.

Senior Congress leader V M Sudheeran demanded an emergency Executive Committee meeting of Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) in the wake of growing displeasure among many party leaders following the allocation of fifth ministerial berth to the IUML.

Today's swearing in ceremony in Raj Bhavan was not attended by many leaders including Electricity Minister Aryadan Mohammed, Minister K B Ganesh Kumar, K Muraleedharan MLA, V D Satheesan MLA and T N Prathapan, MLA.

Aryadan Mohammed said the Congress' decision would affect the unity and smooth functioning of the United Democratic Front. Muraleedharan alleged that they were not informed of by the top Congress leadership about the Cabinet reshuffle and allocation of fifth ministerial berth. Though the last KPCC meeting discussed the IUML demand for a new ministerial berth, it was not decided to provide the minister post, he said.

Meanwhile, CPI (M) state secretary Pinarayi Vijayan and Opposition leader V S Achuthanandan alleged that the ruling Congress was creating an opportunity for the BJP to fish in troubled water. "By allocating fifth ministerial berth to IUML, the Congress undermined the communal balances in the state," they added.

SNDP general secretary Vellapally Natesan alleged that the Congress' decision to allocate additional minister birth was suicidal. It would affect the poll prospects of the Congress in the upcoming by-poll in Neyyatinkara Assembly constituency, he added.

Meanwhile, former Speaker and CPM leader M Vijayakumar Thursday called on NSS General Secretary Sukumaran Nair in Changanassery and sought his support for his party's success in the Neyyatinkara, which fell vacant due to the resignation of CPI (M) MLA R Selvaraj alleging intra-party fight.

The BJP observed a dawn-to-dusk hartal in Thiruvananthapuram district in protest against the allocation of fifth ministerial post to the IUML.
