Deep cracks in road under construction

KOTTAYAM: Deep and wide cracks have appeared in a road that was under construction on the Kottayam- Kumarakom route. According to the local people, the road, adjacent to a protection wall on the banks of Meenachil river, has caved in several feet and there is a crack as long as 20 metres.
The protection wall was scheduled to be inaugurated by the Chief Minister on April 14.
The residents of the area have alleged that the cracks are a result of the illegal sand mining which has been rampant in the area for years.
“This is not the first time that the cracks have appeared on this road. The flow of traffic is in a complete mess because of the pathetic state of the road,” said Shajahan, a local resident.
The protection wall had been built following cases of frequent accidents which had claimed a number of lives. Eleven people died in the last accident when a bus capsized in the river.
