Beemapally Urus festival begins

Monday, April 23, 2012: The annual Urus at the Beemapally Dargah Shereef in Thiruvananthapuram began on Monday with the hoisting of the festival flag.
The 11- day Urus is held to commemorate the death anniversary of Saint Sayyidhathunissa Beema Beevi and her son Ashaikhu Sayidushaheed Maheen Aboobaker who were laid to rest at the Dargah Shereef.
Religious discourses by Muslim scholars, cultural performances and prayer meetings will be held during the event. Rituals such as Munajat, reading of Moulood and Ratheeb are the noted festivities of the event.
Government has declared local holiday for educational institutions and government offices today in connection with the Urus.
