'10 more coastal police stations soon'

KOTTAYAM: The Crime and Criminal Tracking Network System (CCTNS), a centrally-funded programme which will interconnect police stations across the country, would be introduced in the state soon, said Home Minister Thiruvanchoor Radhakrishnan on Sunday.
Speaking at the Meet the Press programme organised by the Kottayam Press Club on Sunday, he said an amount of `48 crore would be spent to launch the project which would create a databank of crime and criminals and their biometric profiles. In a bid to shore up coastal security, 10 more coastal police stations would be set up across the state soon, the minister said.
“Police stations would be opened at key coastal points such as Poovar, Anchuthengu, Ponnani, Varanad, Thalassery, Vadakara, Arthunkal, Elathoor, Thrikkarippoor and Kumabala,” he said and added that the police force would be revamped by equipping it with modern apparatuses.
To take care of the elderly, the department would initiate a Rs 10-crore project, ‘Care Aided Relief for Elderly People (CARE)’, which is expected to be launched on the first anniversary of the UDF ministry, the minister said.
On the growing evidence of criminalisation of the department, the minister said strict action would be taken against offenders. Actions would also be initiated to spruce up the people-friendly image of the state police, he added.
Thiruvanchoor said that he would carry forward the projects initiated by Oommen Chandy, who previously held the Home Department.
The minister, who was holding the Revenue portfolio, refused to comment on the questions regarding the fifth-minister imbroglio and the consequent cabinet reshuffle. “There is nothing unusual in the reshuffle. The Chief Minister has already said that he wanted to cut down the workload,” the minister said and added that the government has no issues with the Nair Service Society, which fumed over the fifth ministerial berth to the Indian Union Muslim League.
