Vizhinjam project: Mudra port bid not approved

Wednesday, January 04, 2012: The Home Ministry did not approve Mudra Port and Special Economic Zone (SEZ) to be partners for developing and operating the Vizhinjam international seaport near Thiruvananthapuram. Hence Mudra Port will not be able to take part in the tender process.
Mudra port and Welspun had expressed interest in the project and were selected to submit the technical and financial bids. But they need the permission of the Home Ministry and the External Ministry to submit the financial bids. But Mudra was rejected.
The Vizhinjam International Deepwater Multipurpose Seaport is proposed to follow landlord port model, where dredging, reclamation and basic infrastructure like construction of break-water and quay will be done by Vizhinjam International Seaport Limited, a fully owned by the government company.
