Centre ready to re-probe Thachankary's foreign jaunt, says Mullappally

KOZHIKODE: The centre was prepared to conduct a re-probe into unofficial foreign jaunt, without government nod of a top Kerala police officer over one-and-a-half years ago, minister of State for Home Mullappally Ramachandran said Sunday.


Talking to newspersons here after inaugurating a joint meet of the South Malabar Gramin Bank Staff Association and the Officers Congress here he said the Centre was in receipt of the state government letter seeking authenticity of Home Ministry's order for reinvestigation into the visit to Qatar by Additional Director General of Police (ADGP) Tomin J. Thachankary on the recommendation of the National Investigation Agency (NIA).


Ruling out Central intervention into the reinstatement of Thanchankary, who was facing probe into the case as Managing Director of the State-owned Marketfed, he said the state government was solely responsible for the action. The Minister said he was not aware how the correspondents between the Centre and the state government on the issue was leaked to media, adding newspersons should find out how it all happened.


The BJP in the state urged the state government to amend Kerala Police Act in order to prevent such foreign trips of top officials without official nod. Talking to newspersons here BJP Kerala unit president V Muraleedharan said Thanchankary, who was reinstated in service should be expelled as the expenses on his trip to Qatar in April 2010 when he was IG of police (Kannur Range) was reportedly footed by unscrupulous elements. He alleged Thanchankary also undertook a trip to Bangalore to help Thadiyantavite Nazir, who was then facing trial in a terror-related case and later jailed, when he was Kannur IG. The party would launch state-wide agitation if the government failed to remove the controversial officer from service, he added.
