New waste treatment plant to come up in Bonakkad

Wednesday, December 21, 2011: As a temporary solution for the Vilappilsala garbage issue, the state government has decided to set up a new waste treatment plant at Bonakkad.
The decision comes in the wake of the Vilappil panchayat’s decision to shut down the Vilappilsala solid-waste treatment plant.
The garbage treatment plant, which has a capacity of 500 tonnes, would be built at the 150 acres of government land. The plant would be set up as zero waste project model.
The Vilappil panchayat on Monday had passed a resolution to shut down the controversial plant. The Vilappilsala Janakeeya Samith and the panchayat authorities said that garbage trucks will not be allowed to enter the plant.

Chief Minister has called a meeting to bring about a solution to the vexed issue but Vilappilsala panchayat president is of the view that they will not compromise on closure of the factory.
The Janakeeya Samithi has alleged that the 11-year-old garbage treatment plant had caused serious health and environmental issues in Vilappilsala and surrounding panchayats, including contamination of ground water and pollution of the Karamana river.
