Mullaperiyar: Thousands take part in human chain

Thursday, December 08, 2011: People from different walks of life joined hands this afternoon to form a human chain organised by the LDF from Mullapeiryar to backwaters of Kochi seeking resolution of the Mullaperiyar dam issue which has seen Kerala and Tamil Nadu at loggerheads.
People linked their arms to one another’s to form a nearly 248 km-long line and took a pledge to support a new dam and save the lives of people living in four districts in the downstream of the reservoir. They raised slogans supporting the construction of a new dam soon and protecting the environment and the people of Kerala.
CPI (M) leader and former Speaker held one end of the chain here and Opposition Leader V.S. Achuthanandan the other end at Marine Drive in Kochi. The human chain was organised by the Left Democratic Front demanding construction of a new dam at Mullaperiyar and reducing the water level in the existing dam.
CPI (M) leader Kodiyeri Balarkrishan and CPI (M) State Secretary Pinarai Vijayan, former Minister Benoy Viswam and other leaders of the LDF joined the chain at Vandiperiyar and Karinkulam Chappath near here where members of the Assembly are offering fast.
