Mullaperiyar row: TN to boycott official-level talks

Wednesday, December 14, 2011: Tamil Nadu Government today informed the Centre that it will not attend the official-level informal talks scheduled to be held on 16th of this month.
Tamil Nadu Government informed that they are not ready for talks until a report from Supreme Court appointed empowered committee.
Kerala has been pressing for its demand for constructing a new dam at Mullaperiyar besides reducing the water level to 120 feet from 136 feet (the full reservoir level is 152 feet).
Both the states have been at loggerhead over the Mullaperiyar dam, built in Idukki under an 1886 accord between the then Maharaja of Travancore and the erstwhile British Raj. While the dam is located in Kerala, its waters serve Tamil Nadu.
Tamil Nadu wants the dam’s storage capacity to be increased by raising the dam height - from 136 feet (41.5 m) to 142 feet (43 m) as irrigation needs have shot up in the state.
