Kerala leaders urged to stay calm on dam row

Wednesday, December 21, 2011: Kerala Assembly Speaker G Karthikeyan today appealed to leaders to exercise restraint while making statements on the Mullaperiyar Dam issue over which the state is locked in a raging row with Tamil Nadu.
“Leaders should speak as leaders and should not generate emotions or passions,” Karthikeyan told reporters while giving details of the Diamond Jubilee Celebrations of Kerala Assembly secretariat here.
Political leadership should try to built confidence among people, he said, referring to incidents of violence on the dam issue. Nothing should be done that would increase tension between the two states on the issue, he said.
Being the eve of Christmas and New Year festivities, this was the time movement of people from both states was more, he said and wanted everybody to exercise restraint.
Stating that the issue should be settled through talks, Karthikeyan said it was good that Prime Minister Manmohan Singh had intervened in the matter.
