TN Govt to curb building new dam at Mullaperiyar

Thursday, August 4, 2011: Tamil Nadu Finance Minister O Pannerselvam on Thursday said that the J Jayalalitha-led AIADMK government will put pressure on the Centre to stop Kerala from building a new dam at the controversial Mullaperiyar reservoir. He was presenting the first budget of the newly sworn in AIADMK government.

The Mullaperiyar reservoir is situated in Idukki district bordering Kerala and Tamil Nadu. While Kerala is pressing for a new dam citing safety aspects, Tamil Nadu has opposed it holding that the state would not get sufficient quantity of water which it now gets to irrigate parts of Madurai district.
The dispute is now under consideration of the Supreme Court which had appointed an Empowered Committee to look into the safety and other aspects of the existing structure.
