No move to evict people around temple:CM

Thursday, August 04, 2011: Chief Minister Oommen Chandy said that Kerala government has no proposal before it to evict people residing around the Sree Padmanabhaswamy Temple, where priceless articles were found during an inventory of its cellars, on grounds of security. “There is no move to relocate the people from their respective residences on ground of security,” Chandy told reporters after a cabinet meeting.

State-of-art security system could be installed in the temple with modern equipment without displacing the local people living around the temple, Chandy said. Government had already initiated steps to provide high security to the temple, he said. A team of police personnel under the command of a Superintendent of police, had already been deployed in and outside the temple to monitor security arrangements, he added.
The temple treasure was found during an inventory by a supreme court appointed panel in June. There were reports that there was a move to evict the hundreds of residents and local vendors as part of providing foolproof security to the temple. Many people are descendants of those who had settled in the area centuries ago.
