Wednesday, August 24, 2011: The Supreme Court did not consider Tamil Nadu’s demand of conducting maintenance work in Mullaperiyar dam. The constitution bench of the court said the demand can be considered after getting the report of the panel entrusted to study the safety of the dam. The court criticized the centre for not appointing a scientific expert in the case. The court directed to inform their decision within two weeks.
Tamil Nadu’s plea sought permission to carry out maintenance on the cracks noticed in the dam. The second plea submitted requesting to stop Kerala from constructing a new dam was not considered.
The panel has been given time till February 29, 2012 to submit the report. They were earlier asked to submit the report before October 31.
