Gujarat: Inflammable gas coming out of land near ONGC well

Saturday, August 06, 2011: Two months after water gushed out from earth, a foul-smelling, inflammable gas is now coming out of the place in Olpad town in the district. The open plot of land in Dadanagar Housing Colony on Sayan-Saras road, where the gas was noticed on Thursday evening, is near the well number 4 of Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC).

The district officials have asked the ONGC to look into the phenomenon, but the corporation has been unable to ascertain the source of the gas. Some children playing on the plot noticed the gas coming out when they dug out a small pit. Earlier, water was noticed coming out of earth in the same area.
After realising that the gas was inflammable, panicky residents informed the authorities. Taluka mamalatdar (official) V S Jadhav said, “The district Collector has asked the ONGC to take remedial measures.”
ONGC sent a team to the spot yesterday. B S Adhikari, an ONGC official, said, “Our chemical analysis team tried to take the sample of the gas but failed due to its low pressure. We are trying to ascertain the cause behind the occurrence, but the phenomenon is not related to oil.
