Five killed in train-car collision near Ochira


Sunday, August 7, 2011: Five people were killed and one seriously injured after the Maveli Express train collided with a tempo van at an unmanned railway crossing in between Vayanakam and Kottampally near Ochira in Kollam district on Saturday night at 9.15 pm.
The Maveli Express coming from Thiruvananthapuram was heading towards Mangalore.

The bodies were found scattered into pieces. Three of the five persons dead are construction workers from West Bengal. The three bodies have been shifted to the mortuary at Karunagappally Taluk Hospital.
The two others are Malayalees: Sasidharan Pillai (35), the tempo driver from Madathinkarayma, and the other (name unknown) hails from Kottamkulangara, Ochira.
Santhosh, who was seriously injured, has been admitted to Alappuzha Medical College Hospital.
The Kollam Senior Divisional Medical Officer and the Kollam Assistant Divisional Engineer rushed to the assistance of rescue team. The Railway Divisional Safety Officer from Thiruvananthapuram, Selvam and team has also reached the spot.
