Delay in voting an ’insult to democracy’: LDF

Friday, August 12, 2011: Opposition Left Democratic Front (LDF) on Thursday said that the alleged delay in voting in Kerala Assembly on the Appropriation Bill on July 20, which helped the UDF government to survive, amounted to “insulting democracy”.
In a statement here, LDF convenor Vaikom Viswan alleged that the voting on the Bill, which was to take place at 1.30 pm on July 20, was “deliberately delayed” to ensure that all UDF members were present in the House, for which Finance Minister KM Mani prolonged his speech.
The video clippings that were shown to ruling party MLAs on Wednesday clearly proved that there was “absolute confusion” during the voting, he said. It was “grossly improper” on the part of Chief Minister Oommen Chandy to seek apology from Opposition leader VS Achuthananandan for a fault of the ruling front in the Floor of the House under his leadership, Viswan said.
Seeking to put a lid on opposition allegation of “bogus voting” in the Assembly during division on the Appropriation Bill on July 20, the video footages of the House proceedings were examined yesterday, which found that 69 members from the ruling UDF were present and voted as claimed by the ruling side.
