ADB aid for 1000 km road construction

Thiruvananthapuram: An exclusive company would be set up for scientific reconstruction of 1000 km roads in the state. The state government is planning to seek a Rs 2000 crore loan from ADB for the project costing Rs 5000 crore.

The State Road Improvement project would be registered as a company and aims to reconstruct state highways, selected district roads and junctions and facilitate special security measures for pedestrians. Of the total cost, Rs 1000 crore would be given by the state govt for land takeover.

Rs 2000 crore would be from foreign banks, Rs 1200 crore from infrastructure bonds and Rs 800 from private participation projects. The responsibility to accumulate funds rests with Road Fund board. With ADB showing interest on the primary report, the project would gain importance soon.

As per the project, roads wouldn't be widened but it would clear unscientific curves. International level signal systems would be set up at traffic junctions. The procedure for registering the project has begun and will start functioning within three months. After identifying 1000 km roads, it would be divided into 8 units with 150 km length. The PWD department expects to complete the project within 5 years.
