47 day Trawling ban takes effects in kerala

 Wednesday, June 15, 2011: The 47-day ban on trawling by mechanized fishing boats during monsoon in Kerala came into effect from Tuesday midnight. The ban will be in force within 12 nautical miles (22.22 km) from the shoreline till July 31.
Chief Minister Oommen Chandy had said that fishermen who rendered jobless during the period would be given free ration.
Fishermen would also get financial assistance under the Fish workers Welfare Scheme, he said. Trawling is banned the state in view of the gestation period of different species of fishes during monsoon.
