Kerala Latest News Furadan Banned in Kerala and financial aid to endosulfan victims


Wednesday, May 04, 2011: The State Government has today decided to ban almost eight powerful pesticides including Furadan in the State.The notification regarding ban on pesticides will be issued within two days.

Chief Minister VS Achuthanandan today said that the Government will give special financial aid to endosulfan affected children. The decision was taken in the Cabinet meeting held today.

Briefing the reporters after the meeting, the Chief Minister said that the Pullumedu tragedy will be probed by Justice Hariharan Nair, a retired High Court Judge. VS also added that E-tendering system will be implemented in PWD department.

Agriculture Minister Mullakkara Ratnakaran today gave direction to the Plantation Corporation to give Rs 5 crore as compensation to the endosulfan victims.

The direction was given after the high level meeting convened by the Minister to discuss about regulation of pesticides. The Minister added that the State Government will also give financial aid to endosulfan victims.

The government has taken certain steps to control the use of pesticides, including making prescription mandatory for the sale.
